How to customize the more tag to get better engagement on your blog

It’s important to get readers to engage with your site and one of the best ways to do that is to use the “more” tag when writing a post. Here’s an example from my last post.

It’s a small bit of code you can place in the middle of your blog post that will show everything before that point on the home page but force the reader to click on the link to view the rest of the post. This draws the reader onto the page where they can leave a comment, “Like” or tweet about the individual post. There are a few variations of what the more tag displays on your page. In my theme it’s “Click to continue…” which is pretty boring.

You can very easily customize your more tags and here’s how.

In the HTML view the more tag looks like this:

In the visual editor the more tag looks like this:

To customize the text simply add text inside the more tag while in the HTML editor view. I often add an ellipsis (…) to the end because it communicates the idea of a continued thought.

So did it work for you? If it didn’t you should contact your theme’s creator to see how to customize your more tag. Good luck!

Hey Andy,
This is an awesome tip! I noticed that in Google Reader the function didn’t work. Do you think you want RSS subscribers clicking over to your blog. I follow many that do, the biggest names being John C. Maxwell’s or the Leadership Freak, and I don’t mind it. What do you think?

It annoys me on RSS readers honestly. I let my readers have the whole post.

Do you check your referral traffic in Google Analytics to measure growth? Or maybe the better questions is how do you measure success on your blog?

I’m not too savvy or I just don’t worry about analytics that much. Maybe I should. I try to write good headlines but more than anything I try to reply to comments and write stuff people resonate with. For now my blog is more for me than anyone else. It’s a creative outlet for my shows and thoughts. In the coming months I’ll use it to point people to a few products I”m developing http://www.FixYourInbox.com etc.
