WordPress blogging tip: Use fullscreen mode to write your posts

in How I work, Writing

You will be distracted by something before you finish reading this post because that’s the way our brains work now. If that’s true then we all need things to help us stay focused. If you use WordPress as your platform for your web site then there’s a great option that provides a distraction free environment for you to write your content. You need to be in the HTML tab of your page or post and then you should see the “Fullscreen” button.

HTML mode shows fullscreen button

If you combine the fullscreen mode in WordPress with fullscreen mode for your browser (Cmd+Shift+F on a Mac) then you get a totally distraction free writing environment. Here’s what it looks like while I write this post.

Wordpress fullscreen + browser fullscreen

By moving your mouse outside the composition window while in fullscreen mode you’ll see a few options show up in the top menu.

Wordpress fullscreen writing options

  • “Exit fullscreen” or better yet just hit the ESC button to do that.
  • Switch back to visual mode
  • Access your “Media”
  • Create a link
  • “Save” your post. To my knowledge WordPress does save automatically but it doesn’t hurt to pause occasionally and hit “Save”

Sometimes I use Evernote or OmmWriter to compose my posts but if you’re ready to create your post with pictures and links in place then using the Fullscreen mode is a great option.

What do you do to create a distraction free environment and create great content? Leave me a comment. I read them all I promise.

Another great tip, Andy. Definitely gonna give this one a whirl.
Other things I have to do:
-turn off the music (I love it – a little too much!)
-turn off the phone (horrors!)
