Dan and Bryan are both in the 3rd course of Free Agent Academy, Idea. They have relevant ideas to pursue, but wanted some group feedback. Jonathan Pool and I led a brainstorming discussion on their ideas, including feedback from FAA members and some of the public from the live show.

Listen below, and if you have some ideas or comments for them, please leave in the comments section below!

Dan Tate – From Omaha, NE, married with two young boy. “I’m full-time employed with PayPal, the eBay company that processes payments online.”
Idea 1: I’ve posted about my Media in Missions idea that, in brief, is a team of people that creates all the material for a missionary to tell others about their work: print, photo, video, audio, etc. I envision this as a broad flexible idea that could incorporate many individual ideas: young volunteers come alongside professionals in an educational setting, media opportunities both at home, abroad, and online for those in distant areas, as well as short- and long-term opportunities for people to go into the field for a single project or an entire tour. I see the strength of this idea being the interest people have in the updates from the mission field and the challenges being funding, building the team, etc.
Idea 2: Stepping back from the media focus many of my projects have had over the years, I enjoy doing and trying new things far outside art and media. I wonder if building a “We do that” framework from a core team of people that are able to recognize the challenges, formulate solutions, and deliver possibilities would be a better fit to my broad scope. Challenges here start with the idea being so broad I don’t have the refinement necessary to develop the idea and deliver to clients a message of what we do. Consultant is a poor adjective and I need assistance refining how I would apply my broad interests in an advising role to others.
Bryan Morris – Visalia, CA, married with three young kiddos. “I’m full time employed as a car wash tech.”
I am not really clear on what one idea. I thought I would like to do some kind of coaching, but Jonathan helped me realize that is not an exact fit. Coaches tend to work with people on the phone, I need to connect with people. I try to interact with people in the groups but it is hard to focus. These are the ideas I’ve come up with so far.
1 Career coach – Help individuals find the career they were made to do. I would work with clients one
2 Financial coach – Help individuals get out of debt, and make there money behave.
3 Business start up coach – Help individuals take there idea to market.
4 Success coach – Help individuals find success in all area’s of there lives.
5 Coach teens to find there fit in life – Help high school kids to choose a path that fits there wiring.

…because without it, you may never change. I unfortunately believe that to be true for most people, me included.

If you’ve been reading or listening for long now, you know my stance is that it’s your responsibility to discover and pursue your personal calling, and it’s very hard to fully live out and engage in your calling when you are traditionally employed. It just sucks up too much of your time and energy.

But to rock the boat of your current circumstances and commit to a hard journey of life change, is rare. And my experience is that it normally doesn’t happen if or until a great trial, tribulation or tragedy strikes.

Now…the worst enemy of all is NOTHING happening. Then you end up 60 and give up, turning your attention to doing what you can to coast to the end in as much comfort as you can afford.

So does anyone achieve success without bad happening? Sure! But seldom. So you can now decide what you want to happen:

Nothing
Wait till tragedy
Commit and go forth now

I personally never had a problem going for broke and pursuing my passions. Trouble was…I initially ended up broke. Which is what most of you fear most. Well, guess what, that was the trial and tribulation it took for me to marry wisdom along with passion. Wisdom in the form of seeking help, counsel and accountability and to quit going it alone. Getting the ‘Self’ out of self-employment.

Honestly, I can’t say going broke was even what did it, I might still be scrambling to piece things together if my dear wife hadn’t finally hit me with, “I love you, but I’m done. I’ve lost faith, and I’m thinking about packing the kids up and leaving while you come to some sense of sanity.”

I wish I’d come to my senses before hitting the bottom. But…I didn’t.

Part of this is getting honest with yourself. Do you really believe in doing something different? Pursuing ‘calling’ and ‘self-employment’ and a life of wholeness and purpose? Cause at heart you may just not be convicted. So…make peace with that.

If however, you do believe…then what is going to happen to disrupt your life and go forth? How bad does it have to get?

AGAIN, one of these will end up being your reality, big change and payoff won’t find you or happen to you:

Nothing
This is the bulk of society. They went to school, worked a ton at various jobs, raised some kids, retired and spent the last 20+ years trying to fill the time with something other than doctors visits for their failing health. That’s honestly the norm and where you’ll get the least resistance

Wait ’til tragedy
Tragedy comes in various forms for people. Near fatal health issues, end or sever strain of relationships (divorce or death), financial ruin such as deep debt or bankruptcy, depression, loss of career, crisis of faith, etc… I shared above that for me it was financial and marital, but I’ve seen many other vehicles as the catalyst for others.

Commit now
Again, this is the rarity. This is the person who honestly wakes up as dependent on the Lord when things are OK, as they do when their child is on the deathbed. I’m seeing myself mature more these days. Making big decisions when I’m healthy instead of waiting till it gets really unhealthy. Cause I’ve seen how much harder it is to right things after they really, really go wrong.

So what’s the verdict for you? Pick one:

I think this is a crock and over time I’ll slowly create something better, or it will happen to me on it’s own
Things aren’t good now, but I still choose to remain steady because my fear of what may happen if I go after something big is just to great
I believe I should act, but I don’t know what it till take to cause me to
I know I need to do something now, I’ll never be ‘ready’, but here we go…

Here is the show where I covered and expounded on this post:

Evernote is the kind of tool that could radically improve your productivity and business. One of the coolest features of Evernote is how can identify text in pictures. This week I was reading “Free” a great book by Chris Anderson. Since it’s a library book I can’t write in it. The picture below was taken with my iPod touch using the Evernote application. You can see my word search on the top right and then you can see Evernote’s highlight of the word in the picture I took. Next time you’re trying to remember a sign, page or any kind of text just take a picture of it with Evernote and it will keep track of it for you. Click to continue…

Make people angry

in Natural Childbirth Podcast

Make people angry. I’m not going to qualify that. I mean every word of it. If what you’re saying isn’t making SOMEONE upset, angry or disappointed then whatever your saying isn’t worth most of us listening to. One guy told me that my Linchpin Podcast was like a death sentence to his career. He was right because his “art” had been turned into a commodity so it was worth a lot less now. He was mad. It bothered me for about an hour and then I enjoyed it.  I didn’t enjoy him making less money but I enjoyed that the show had a clear message that was being heard. The groups were being divided into believers and haters, fans and dissidents.

Talk about the sacred stuff

There are some things that are very sacred to women and one of them is their birth experience. I’m a tech guy, a lover of Apple products and well brewed beers. I’m also quite educated on childbirth after having helped my wife deliver both of our kids without any pain medication. I know some stuff about childbirth. I started this new show and the first episode is on TPMN and will be on iTunes at the start of August 2011. Many women are upset with the content of the show. I think natural childbirth should be the goal of every woman for their benefit and for the benefit of their child. It doesn’t always work out that way but I think natural childbirth should be the standard, not the exception. That makes women mad. They feel like I’m telling them they did something wrong. I am telling them they did something wrong.

There are two kinds of wrong.

1. I know what I should do and I choose not do it. (willful defiance)
2. I didn’t know I was supposed to do it that way so I didn’t do it. (ignorance)

Most women are ignorant about childbirth. They don’t even know that natural childbirth is possible for most women, including themselves. Women don’t like to be told they did something wrong, even if they didn’t know the right way to do it.  I’m getting lots of feedback and not all of it is positive. I enjoy it because it means people are listening/reading and then taking the time to interact. Conversations are happening. Conflict is ensuing. People are getting angry. They’re interested, even if they disagree.

Silence is not golden, it means you’re boring

The alternative to the anger is to be ignored. If you’re going to be ignored then just don’t do anything at all. You’ll get the same reaction either way, which is no reaction at all.
