If self-employment is just a ‘nice’ option for work, and if the business idea is simply an opportunity that doesn’t really connect with your heart, the chances for success are SLIM. This is why we have such dour stats on small biz success.

Yet when folks truly believe that they require self-employment in order to live out their beliefs, and if the idea has some connection to their values…success is highly probable! This is why we see folks with mediocre ideas and little thought to business plans and financial projections succeed anyway and put all the Harvard MBA students to shame.

Thus why we start the curriculum in Free Agent Academy with our ‘Calling’ course, led by Gary Barkalow of The Noble Heart. He is the maestro of ‘calling.’ It’s deep, faith based and fully touchy-feely. You can question what that has to do with having a business that successfully sells tamales (as an example of a guy I know), or trust we aren’t doing this for no reason… Anyone remember Mr. Miyagi? “Wax on, wax off.” Not till later, did ‘Daniel-san’ realize the value.

When Free Agent Academy members complete the Calling course curriculum, they fill out a ‘Graduation Assignment.’ Gary Barkalow and I review these together. This week we have SEVEN (but only got through six) to review. We decided to open the class to the public.

Here are the questions that grads answered. Understand these are in context of the course work, so you may not fully understand all the vernacular:

1. What are the defining moments in your life?
The ways you have been wounded in the past and the sentences that were lodged in your heart, defining:
- who you are
- what others expect / want / demand you to be
- how life works
- what God is like and what He expects / wants / demands from you

2. What is the artistry, love, passion, curiosity that was present in your youth?

3. What desires are you aware of at this point in your life? Which one(s) would fall into each of these categories?
- Strongest, most compelling desire(s)
- Historic, most consistent desire(s)
- Stories of desire – the books and movies that you love contain the theme of this desire
- Words of desire – what are you favorite, most used words (ask others)

4. How would you describe your glory (brilliance, weightiness, splendor, strength, beauty, abundance) or your effect? In other words, what are you compelled to do in every situation? Articulate this in terms of 3 to 6 words.

5. God is always developing our Strength of Heart as He is revealing the Desires of Our Heart. What aspect of your character is He working on right now?

6. How is God wanting you to re-align your life with what He has shown you concerning your desires and your character?

Listen below to the intimate sharings of our six graduates. I guarantee you’ll find much common ground to your own life:

I can’t find anything in the fridge and it’s not my fault, it’s genetic.

Things to spot series. I love them! My dog ate them so I needed to get more for our son.

Sara says we should get a things to spot in the fridge book.

When I was a kid my mom would send me down to this pantry. It was like staring at one of those pictures that if you stare at long enough your eyes magically show a picture within a picture…but I could never do it!
“You don’t look at the picture” – Then what do I look at?

So what is it that you genetically stink at?
I’m not saying you’ll ever defeat it, it’s a lot like sin in that way.

You CAN improve it though.

  • Picking up things around the house – MUCH better.
  • Putting clothes in the hamper
  • Doing stuff around the house
  • Turning off devices at home…well, still working on that.

How do you deal with it? Do you get angry and wait for them to change tomorrow? Do you yell louder?
How’s that working for you?

You cannot change your spouse but you can encourage your spouse to change from within.

Treat them like a dog:

  • Praise them when they do it right.
  • Reward them
  • Make it easy for them – give good directions – Get more excited as they get closer

The greatest internal obstacles to podcasting are opposites.
1. They will hear me and disagree with me.
2. No one will hear me.

Risk and podcasting
Podcasting involves risk. You risk having haters and you risk having no one listen. The rewards are fans and listeners. People who don’t podcast, but want to, are usually focusing on the haters or don’t believe enough in their message. They think no one will listen. They create a self-fulfilling prophecy by not creating content they ensure no one is listening 100% of the time. They also ensure there are no haters, except they are hating themselves by not believing enough in their ideas to create content.

Don’t cuss in church

There’s an internal filter all of us have before we speak. If you’re in church you try not to cuss. If you’re with a girlfriend you try not to be crude. If you’re at a job interview you try to be professional. If you call into a radio show you are probably sharing an opinion. So what’s the filter for podcasters? Your internal filter has to be very thin or you’ll waste people’s time and they won’t come back. I’m not encouraging you to cuss, be unprofessional or lack humility. The filter I’m focusing on is the one that tells you try to be articulate as you share your opinion. It (the filter) tells you that more people will listen if you’re middle of the road. It tells you to speak to the masses. The masses are millions. You’d be happy with 5,000 listeners wouldn’t you? You need to talk to 5,000.

A guy talking about birth

My internal filter tells me that I’m a man and I can’t start a show about natural childbirth. My wife and I have two kids and a third will be arriving in Ocotber. She’s had both of our children with no pain medication. We’ve gone to months and months of classes and read lots of lots of information on the subject of birth. When we have our kids we do it as a team, she literally leans on me for support through most of the labor. (Even as I write these words my internal filter is telling me to stop writing them.) I believe women need encouragement and education regarding natural childbirth. It’s something most women can do and yet so few of them do. They are being robbed of a beautiful birth experience in the name of modern medicine. I want to help them reclaim the power that modern medicine has stolen from them in the name of “progress”. I’m going to interview women about their birth experiences and it’s going to be controversial, blunt and awkward. I’m going to have a show about natural childbirth because my filter is thin. How thick is your filter? Thin it out and do something. The world will be a better place if you do.
