In basketball when you are watching your competition instead of defending them and they run past you to score a basket they say, “You got caught looking.”

How many blogs do you subscribe to?
How many books do you read?
How many podcasts do you consume?
How many newsletters are you subscribed to?
That’s a lot of great information and on the surface it’s good to be a learner. I pride myself on being one. Believe it or not you’re competing against all of those people because each of us is competing for attention. If you and I are so busy taking in information and never get around to creating our own art then guess what…we got caught looking.

The idea of running my business and life without Evernote scares me. You should be using it and if you’re not then give it a try today. It is an essential tool for me in so many areas of my business; podcast show planning, note taking for every conversation of importance, planning digital products, collaborating with my virtual assistant…and lots more. I’m in Evernote every day and I’m a Premium subscriber which costs less than $50 a year. Once you know the power of Evernote you’ll never live without it.
They recently pushed out a public Beta of their Evernote 5 Desktop program and unfortunately I’m frustrated with several of the changes. There are some bright spots as well but for now I may go back to the current version. I know change takes time and there are elements that are growing on me but in so many ways it feels like style beat out function in the development of this version. My gripes;
- No customizable menu bar – I’m an advanced user in a sense that I like to customize almost every part of my user experience. In the latest version Evernote took away the ability to customize the top toolbar’s navigation buttons completely and moved everything to the sidebar. Now I’m forced to keep a column open that I used to close almost every time I used the program. It’s difficult when an update gives you less choices than a past version.

“You can’t read that here.”
Our friend’s 3rd grade daughter brought her Bible to school last week to read it during their designated reading time. Applause to the teacher for building in some time for kids to read books they actually want to read. Far too many kids leave school hating books instead of being hungry for more of them. On this particular day the teacher was gone and there was a substitute teacher. They made a mistake.
It’s not about religious liberty
She told my friend’s daughter that she couldn’t read her Bible at school. My friend’s daughter complied but when she returned home she told her mom what had happened. She was hurt, who wouldn’t? Her choice had been squelched. This isn’t a rant about religious liberty. 99.9% of the people reading these sentences agree that the substitute teacher was completely out of line in terms of religious liberty. The larger issue is the fear of ideas.

Last week I had a great conversation with the CEO of a startup company that I believe will help millions of business owners like me. We discussed their service but more than anything we discussed the human dispositions that business owners must understand and leverage in order to have a successful company.
Tell me I belong or I’m gone
If you want someone to join your club, buy your product or subscribe to your content then they have to connect with you on an emotional level. I need to know that I belong. If you are offering a service then tell me who the service is for. If I fall into that group then I’ll sign up, if I don’t fall into that group and don’t sign up that’s a good thing because your service isn’t for everyone. When you give examples of who can be served through your service you help those people say yes to you. Help the right customers join you by telling the story of how your product fits who they already are. I want to belong or I’m gone.
