Do I have to call it an ebook?

In the next few weeks I’ll be shipping my first book. I don’t tell people I wrote an ebook though, I tell them I wrote a book. (You can get a free copy by going here.)

eBooks sound amateur and cheap
Unless you’re writing a book by hand then at some point every book is an ebook. The fact that the book may or may not exist on a physical page seems unrelated to what I call it. I wrote a book, not an ebook.

Working cover - WILL CHANGE

When I hear the term ebook outside of a direct conversation of which version I prefer to read (ebook or print) I automatically think “amateur or cheap”. That’s why I don’t say I wrote an ebook. I wrote a book.

  • It will be on Amazon in a few weeks.
  • It will be in iBooks after that.
  • It will become an iPhone app.
  • It’s a series of 30 text emails.
  • It’s a set of 30 audio recordings.

So what is it? When I release it anyone who buys it can consume it as a Kindle or iBook, a set of emails and a set of audio recordings. It’s a lot of things so please don’t call it an ebook. It’s a book.

Hey Andy, the little guidebook I wrote about Adana Turkey was meant to be an ebook, but I realized a lot of people in my target audience don’t consume books that way. I ended up putting it on Amazon as a physical book using CreateSpace. It was super easy and totally free. If they sell a book for $18, I get $7.50. It’s obviously less than I’d like to get, but for the people who will never buy an ebook, it totally makes sense to have this option. Bottom line is that I was really surprised with how easy it was to convert my PDF creation into a book on Amazon.

Thanks for that. I’ll offer mine too on Createspace but it’s not up first on the priorities. Glad you did figure yours out! Way to SHIP!

Totally agree ebook sounds cheap and amateurish. That’s not always the case of course, but it’s gotten that stigma as they’ve grown in popularity. At the end of the day, it’s a book regardless of the channel I read it on.

I too can’t wait for the book!

Andy, this book is great! I love the way you catch attention. Seems every time I hear you speak or when I read the words you write, the word “intentional” stays in my mind. You like to joke around, but yet everything you do and say has meaning and impact.
That said, I learn a lot from you brother, and I’m glad and very honored to be able to call you a good friend. Thanks for all you do, and for encouraging others to “rise early” and have an awesome day!
