Don't Be Fooled By The Internet Marketing Tease

This might piss some people off, but it has to be said.

The old ways of internet marketing still work, and that’s sad.

Since I’m teaching a free class twice on Wednesday on the one tool that’s essential for building an online course, I thought it was a good time to address this.

The Two Reasons People Teach Online Classes

Reason #1

To tease you. This is the worst. They give enough information to entice you into buying something, but not enough to help you if you don’t buy something. They string out the process and play to your emotions. They automate webinars in ways that deceive, instead of automating in a way that gives you flexibility and choice.

Teasing is the worst because you get no value for the time you’ve spent watching. You only get a sales pitch.

It’s like a fake worm on a hook. You take a bite, and you get hooked, but don’t even get a snack out of the deal.

Reason #2

To be generous. This is the best. Blog posts and podcast episodes are helpful, but there’s nothing as powerful as learning live, and being able to interact with other students and the teacher. Generous marketers let their teaching speak for itself.

They don’t sell hard. They don’t create false scarcity. They don’t create fake countdown timers that reset every time you reload the page. They don’t manipulate or pressure people.

Generous marketers teach great information that adds value.

After they add value they confidently ask for the sale. If customers don’t buy then the marketers sleep well, knowing that they helped people. They create no regret for their customers, just good will.

There isn’t much middle ground. You either help people, or you tease them.

As a customer, you should run from the tease offer and consider the generous one.

The Importance of Elevators: How To Find Success In Anything You Want To Achieve

The most important room in a building with more than two stories is the elevator.

A photo posted by @axelblnga on Oct 26, 2015 at 7:53am PDT

Without the elevator every person that needs to go up would have to spend incomparable amounts of effort getting to their destination. My brother works in a building without enough elevators and he’s constantly complaining about it. I’m sure he’s not the only one that it bothers.

Some observations about elevators

  • If you’re going to have one, build it into your plans, early.
  • Elevators put us closer to our destination.
  • They save us energy so we can spend it on our work.
  • They give us time to think about what is coming.
  • They know the way.
  • They’re not difficult to use but they do require us to be all in.
  • If we trust them they’ll take us where we need to go.
  • They let us bring other people with us.
  • They’re generous, they’ll help anyone that trusts them.

The elevators in my life

Pierce, Dan, Cliff, Mike, Seth, Jeff, Jon, Hugh, Tom…

Read this post again. It’s short. This time think about your desire for success and think about who your elevators are.

If you don’t have elevators life is much more difficult than it should be.

Don’t try to succeed on your own.

Build good elevators into your life.

(This post was inspired by one woman’s description of Seth Godin at a release party for his book Linchpin. That’s the best description I’ve ever heard of him. You can access the previously unreleased video by going to this page and then reading the first few paragraphs to find the hidden password for the video embedded a bit lower down that same page.)

Does your business have an ultimate goal?

Make your life easier, get every post sent to your inbox by clicking here.

Your business can be part of a bigger story.

The primary goal of every business is to make money because without money the business can't continue to operate. Money is like water though, it's hard to hold on to very long and it won't satisfy all your needs.

There's a bridal store in my city that wants to do more than sell dresses. They want to be the first stop on the road to a healthy marriage. They're replacing the gossip magazines with marriage books. They're training their staff to help brides get the resources they need to start their marriages right. They're having conversations and asking questions that matter so they can offer help that matters. They still want to sell dresses and tuxes but that's not the ultimate goal anymore.

I'd rather buy a wedding dress (or a tux) from a store that cares as much about my marriage as my wedding day, wouldn't you?

What's the ultimate goal of your business? Find one soon for your sake and for your customers.

Too generous

How much better could your work, art, marriage, parenting be if your only goal was to be too generous?

Overflowing glass by http://www.sxc.hu/profile/nosheep

The goal is not to be generous. That’s too easy. The goal is to be too generous?

Will you lose customers because you’ve given too much?
Will you run out of ideas for your art because you’ve given too much of it away?
Will your marriage suffer because you’ve given too much time to your spouse?
Will your kids take advantage of you if you give them more time (not more stuff)?

Too generous is my new goal, mantra and marching orders. Tweet this

Doing the minimum

Great news if you own a business, deal with customers, vendors or other human beings.

old road by http://www.sxc.hu/profile/greenchild

Most people do the minimum amount required. You can and should do more than that.

Do more than that and you’ll stick out, make more money, have happier customers, make your boss happy and enjoy your work more.
