Don't Be Fooled By The Internet Marketing Tease

This might piss some people off, but it has to be said.

The old ways of internet marketing still work, and that’s sad.

Since I’m teaching a free class twice on Wednesday on the one tool that’s essential for building an online course, I thought it was a good time to address this.

The Two Reasons People Teach Online Classes

Reason #1

To tease you. This is the worst. They give enough information to entice you into buying something, but not enough to help you if you don’t buy something. They string out the process and play to your emotions. They automate webinars in ways that deceive, instead of automating in a way that gives you flexibility and choice.

Teasing is the worst because you get no value for the time you’ve spent watching. You only get a sales pitch.

It’s like a fake worm on a hook. You take a bite, and you get hooked, but don’t even get a snack out of the deal.

Reason #2

To be generous. This is the best. Blog posts and podcast episodes are helpful, but there’s nothing as powerful as learning live, and being able to interact with other students and the teacher. Generous marketers let their teaching speak for itself.

They don’t sell hard. They don’t create false scarcity. They don’t create fake countdown timers that reset every time you reload the page. They don’t manipulate or pressure people.

Generous marketers teach great information that adds value.

After they add value they confidently ask for the sale. If customers don’t buy then the marketers sleep well, knowing that they helped people. They create no regret for their customers, just good will.

There isn’t much middle ground. You either help people, or you tease them.

As a customer, you should run from the tease offer and consider the generous one.

Making Money On-line; It's Not As Easy, Or As Difficult As You Think

I made $1,183 on-line today.  Making money on-line isn’t as easy, or as difficult as you think.

Why It’s Easy

Last week I made a digital product using my laptop and a $60 webcam.

It took me about 30 hours of work. I mentioned on Facebook that I was making the course and sold five copies to a few friends at an early bird price. Yesterday I woke up with an empty day and I asked myself what I feared, and it was selling my newly created product.

Fear is more often a sign pointing you where you should go next than a sign of what to avoid.

So yesterday I built the sales page, and added two levels to the course, so it had three levels to choose from. I created a webinar for people to register for and started sending out Facebook updates. I also sent one email to 2,000 people on my list. I asked some friends to share about the webinar on Facebook, and three or four did.

Building The Webinar

When I woke up this morning, I built my slides for the presentation. At 10 am I taught 40 people (80 had registered), and nine of them bought the course. That’s a conversion rate of 23%. Pretty awesome.

Sounds Easy!

That sounds kind of easy when I’m vague about it. The truth is, it is easy for me because I’ve been doing it for several years. Making courses, hosting webinars, and asking people to buy things isn’t hard for me.

There are parts of having an on-line business that are difficult.

The Difficult Part

Most people don’t have 30 hours in one week to create a digital product.

Most people don’t know how to create tutorials, build courses, create sales pages, host webinars, and teach strangers through the internet. Most people don’t have 2,000 people to invite to their webinar via email, and don’t have well-connected, generous friends who will share about the event.

I only had 80 people register for the class. Let’s assume 3,000 people saw the event. That’s a 2.7 % conversion rate.

The Reality Of Making Money On-Line

We need more people in the world telling us the reality of making money on-line. It’s not as easy as they say it is. After you learn some skills, it’s not as hard as you think it is.

I have friends who make millions of dollars through the internet. It’s an awesome thing, but don’t assume it’s as easy as they make it look.

What can you do now?

Get better at what you’re good at.

Start creating helpful, inspirational, beautiful, practical, funny, detailed, (pick your adjective) content.

Keep shipping.

It’s harder than it looks but things that are difficult are usually worth it.

How To Learn What Your Audience Wants To Buy

This isn’t the first step. First, you need an audience.

After you’ve got an audience, you should ask them what they want, and then make it.

Why Make Things?

Make it because it will help them.
Make it because making is difficult.
Make it because creating is better than consuming.
Make it because every time you do, you’ll get better at creating.

How To Poll Your Audience For Free

Here’s a simple 10-minute video on how to poll your audience, so you know what they want.

Bonus: Add Them To Your Email List

You can add people who complete your questionnaire to your email list with their permission. This can be done through the method I show in the video or by using a service called Zapier which connects services like a Google Form and your email service through their “zaps.”
