How to save time by creating WordPress bookmarks

If you want to create more content can capture ideas when they come to you then creating shortcuts (in this case bookmarks) can help tremendously. There are a few things I do every day on my site that it made sense for me to make shortcuts to (in the form of bookmarks).  Here are three things I do a lot with my site and how you can create bookmarks to save you time and create more content.

I add new posts.

Upload new images.

I create new Pretty Links, which allows you to create custom URLs.

You can see in the picture below where I’m dragging the highlighted option to my bookmarks bar. It creates a small globe as I drag it.

Highrise WordPress Form Plug-in

I found a sweet plug-in for WordPress that allows you to have visitors plug in their information and it automatically populates in your Highrise account. I hope it helps. If it does leave me the link to your site so I can check yours out. (WARNING: My plugin is creating multiple duplicates of people who enter their information so I”m disabling it for now until I get some answers on how to fix it! I’ll update this post when I have more news.)

How to add Facebook "Like" button to WordPress

You’ll notice a new Facebook “Like” button directly below this post. In case you haven’t heard, Facebook is taking over the world so just embrace it. I choose to embrace it by adding the “Like” button to my WordPress site. I’m lazy so I did it via a plug in. I tried to do a few different plug ins but many of them were confusing (which is ironic because a Facbook plug-in by definition is supposed to be simple, that’s why it’s a plug-in).

How to add Google Reader list to your web site

Google Reader is one of the most powerful ways to consume content published via RSS feeds.  Reader allows you to post a folder of your RSS feeds in a handy widget.  Here’s how to embed a widget of your starred articles.  You can follow the same process for embedding any folder in your Reader account.

Here’s a messy view of my Google Reader page:

– Embedding a list of your starred articles only works if you have “Starred” an article in your Google Reader (duh) – you can see the starred article in Engadget about the iPhone 4’s case.
– Click on “Settings” on the top right corner of your Google Reader page
– Click on “Reader Settings”
– Click on “Folders and Tags”
– Click on “add a clip to your site”

– The window below will pop up. You can customize the color of your Google Reader widget as well as the title, # of items displayed and notes you add in your reader account (didn’t know you could add notes to your articles in Google Reader did you?!

– Highlight the code by clicking inside the code and hitting CTRL + A (or Command + A on a Mac).  Copy the text by hitting CTRL + C (or Command + C on a Mac).
– I prefer to put the widget in the sidebar of my WordPress Blog.  If you use WordPress you should go to your Dashboard – Appearance – Widgets – Text Widget
– Here’s the text widget with the code pasted in (Use CTRL + V to paste the code you copied earlier using CTRL + C).

– Here’s the final widget in my sidebar with the “iPhone 4’s out case…” article that I starred.  Remember that you can do the same thing with any folder you set up in your Google Reader account.
