How To Learn What Your Audience Wants To Buy

This isn’t the first step. First, you need an audience.

After you’ve got an audience, you should ask them what they want, and then make it.

Why Make Things?

Make it because it will help them.
Make it because making is difficult.
Make it because creating is better than consuming.
Make it because every time you do, you’ll get better at creating.

How To Poll Your Audience For Free

Here’s a simple 10-minute video on how to poll your audience, so you know what they want.

Bonus: Add Them To Your Email List

You can add people who complete your questionnaire to your email list with their permission. This can be done through the method I show in the video or by using a service called Zapier which connects services like a Google Form and your email service through their “zaps.”

The Power of ConvertKit Automated Broadcasts

ConvertKit automated broadcasts are a massive time saver if you use ConvertKit and blog. ConvertKit wants to save you time so it does some heavy lifting for you with a few minutes of setup.

Every time you post to your blog ConvertKit can create a broadcast automatically. A broadcast is their name for an email sent to your subscribers. You’ll get an email notifying you that the broadcast is ready to review and send out. You can then review that broadcast and make changes, or send it out automatically if you don’t want to make any changes to it.

Automated Digest Broadcasts

You can also send out a digest broadcast to your subscribers. The picture below shows what the text looks like in a digest format. ConvertKit automated broadcasts compile your posts into an easy to read list, including snippets of text from the posts.

How to use Tether on your iPhone to create a wifi hotspot

Tether is a way to use your smartphone as a modem for your laptop to connect to the internet. It was originally released in the app store for Apple but it was pulled from the store within a few weeks. Tether has rereleased its service and now you do not need access to the app. Here’s how it works.

Go to Tether.com and sign up for a year of the service by choosing “Order Now”. It will cost $15 or $30 depending on when you sign up. This essentially gives you a Tether account which is part of the process of using your phone as a modem.

Choose your device type (Android, iPhone or Blackberry) I’m going to talk about the iPhone because that’s the one I own.

Download the Tether program to your laptop by clicking on the “Download” button.

To establish a connection using your iPhone you follow these steps.
1. Open the Tether program on your computer
2. Open the wifi settings on phone
3. Open the Tether.com site using Safari on your phone

Open the Tether program on your computer and give the temporary wifi network a name and create a 5 or 10 digit password. Click OK.

You’ll see a box like this open up and it will create your temporary “network”.

All this has done is create a network on your computer, not your phone.

Follow the directions on the Tether program. Open the WiFi settings on your phone and choose your new Tether.com network. Enter your password.

Open Safari and go to http://tether.com/web and sign in to your tether account. (HINT!!! To save time in the future make that page a bookmark on your home page by hitting the “share” button then choosing “Add to Home Screen”.) If it worked you’ll see a screen like this.

If you have any connection issues close Tether on your computer and turn off your wifi on your phone and simply start the process over. Once you get the hang of it you can probably create a connection in under 2 minutes.

Tether uses your data plan to create the network for your laptop so if you’re surfing the web, you’re using data on your plan. You’ve been warned.

Did it work for you?

How to create vanity URLs for use in social media

Owning your own domain is important in building your brand and Platform. As sharing has increased in importance over the last few years through services like Facebook and Twitter having a custom URL to share you information has also become helpful. The limited number of characters allowed by Twitter make services like bit.ly, goo.gl popular to save precious characters.

CAUTION: This is complicated stuff for some people so I take zero responsibility if you mess something up on your domain. Use a domain that you use for nothing else.

UPDATE: One user had their URL updated and functioning in 20 minutes today. Mine took over 24 hours. So be patient and let me know if you get it to work!

You can now create your own custom short URL to extend your branding throughout your own site and social media reach. One ALTERNATIVE to this process is to use a subdomain to your domain if it’s short enough. My friend Cliff Ravenscraft uses l.gspn.tv for his vanity URL which works well because his gspn.tv URL is so short. I created atraub.us to use as my vanity URL. Here’s an example of what a Twitter message could look like with three different URLs and how many characters each one totals.

No custom URL – How to fix your nag of a wife – http://www.takepermission.com/babh-podcast/how-to-fix-your-nagging-wife-babh-016/ – (114)

Bit.ly custom URL – How to fix your nag of a wife – http://bit.ly/xLgHsx – (52)

Self-hosted custom URL – How to fix your nag of a wife – http://atraub.us/yoKmZX – (55)

The last link starting with http://www.atraub.us was created with the following tools.
