What's the deal with being "human"?

In case you didn’t notice I added a new tag line to my site a few months ago. “Helping your business be more human.”

My new tag line

It’s a really, really difficult thing to summarize your business without sounding boring, lame, desparate to seem cool, trendy or cheesey. I’m happy with the phrase though because as difficult as it was to step outside of my business so I could see it clearly, I think I acheived a balanced view of what God put me on this earth to help people with.

Someone smarter than myself said long ago, “People don’t like to buy from businesses, they like to buy from people.” The amazing opportunity that social networking, on-line video and a conversational brand experience provides is a much more human business experience. It’s less polished, less formal, less about rules and more about relating.

Humanity in Trash: I love my trash collection service D&C because when I call the phone number on my trash can the owner(Cindy) answers. She sends her son over to my house to do extra work if I need it done. She’s always grateful and she’s always honest. Her employees are the same way. 75% of the time I forget to put my cans at the curb and 100% of the time they go the extra mile to take care of my junk.

Humanity in a toy store: There’s a local toy store here in Sioux Falls that charges more than any other store for most of their items and yet they’re growing like crazy. Why? Nancy (video), that’s why. She’s the owner of the toy store and she works there a lot, often bringing her daughter to work with her (though she doesn’t mind because she’s an 8 year old spending hours in a toy store). Nancy remembers your kid’s names. Nancy wants you to give the right gift, buy quality instead of crap, and she’s always knows what’s new in the world of toys. She’s still learning how to use social media in her business but she’s trying as you can see (Facebook fan page).

I love humanity. I love it when I get to meet the band members of the hottest star

in country music today because you spend five minutes with them and figure out that they’re just humans. We’re all just humans and your business will grow the more human you can be. Quality services and products are non-negotiable and in today’s world showing your humanity is non-negotiable too. So be more human in your business. People like people.
