It started when you were in preschool. The person in charge (the teacher) needed to keep order so we could all learn the predetermined information. That meant you had to raise your hand if you wanted to pee. So what right? Newsflash…you’re still raising your hand. The permission giver now might be your boss, your spouse, your in-laws, or no one. That’s right…no one might be influencing you other than your habit of asking for permission.
Stop asking for permission every time you think you might be messing up the “order” around you. Order makes us obedient. Obedience is the enemy of creativity and passion. If you want permission to start a web site, speak truth into a friend’s life, take a day off of work, pull your kids out of school and teach them at home, stop smoking, drink better beer or charge more for your products then you’ve got permission. Give yourself permission. If it doesn’t work out then you fail and you learn (which means you didn’t really fail).
If you have to ask permission to go pee then you will of course ask permission for everything else in life. Going pee is such a basic, natural action and yet they made us ask permission before we could do it. Give yourself permission because I think God makes everyone capable of greatness (and you are included in “everyone”).
