How to become an expert

Super bowl darth vader

Yesterday my son put his shirt over his head and made a “helmet” out of it.  Then he yelled, “Dad!  Can I be Darth Vader?” Peeking into the next room to see why he was asking me for permission to be Darth Vader it quickly made sense. I replied, “Yeah buddy, you can be Darth Vader.” [Read more…]

Do The Work Podcast

Do The Work was written by Steven Pressfield and released by the Domino Project in the Spring of 2011. After receiving Steve’s approval (he asked me to call him Steve instead of Mr. Pressfield) to create a podcast that explores his book I decided to take his advice and “swing for the fences” with an even bigger idea. Do The Work Community is that larger idea. It is a place where anyone with an idea can come and receive accountability and encouragement as they seek to “do the work” and beat the resistance. If that last sentence didn’t make sense then you haven’t read the book…so you should.

The Do The Work Podcast will launch in July of 2011.  It will highlight the projects being worked on in the Do The Work Community, explore Steve’s book more deeply and continue the lifelong service of providing assistance to artists everywhere who are working to ship their creations.

Join us at the Do The Work Community and check back here often for new episodes of the podcast.

What to think when someone unsubscribes from your newsletter

Business is mostly about how you think
There are idols in the internet world and one of them is Jason Fried of 37Signals.com. He and his biz partner David Heinemeier Hansson have built a company that many in the startup world idolize and then seek to duplicate. I do use a few 37Signals products but the greatest gift I get from 37Signals is the attitude they carry. They are totally ok with the word “No”. They are happy to lose certain customers. They build and run a business that they love not because of the money it produces but because of the problems it solves.

Not everyone is a fan
I cancelled my subscription to Highrise (affiliate link to 37Signals’ contact management software) last year because [Read more…]

How to start your work day

Crowded desktop

Doomed from the start

You turn it on or wake it up every day. It has replaced your real desk top with a desktop full of icons representing folders, files and shortcuts to programs. I’m like you. I move my mouse and it wakes from its energy saving slumber. It greets me with a picture of my children, a dock leading me to programs I use most and items that I have deemed important enough to remind me of their presence every time I visit my desktop.

Sensory overload

You should not wake yourself to CNN, Fox News or any other sensory heavy blast of information. Why then do we wake ourselves to [Read more…]

It's about more than social media: a tweetup with Jeff Hayzlett and Jeff Pulver

Today I had the honor of spending some time with Jeff Hayzlett and Jeff Pulver. Since they both have their own Wikipedia pages they’re famous enough that you might know who they are. Hayzlett has worked at Kodak for many years and now has a book out and a television deal. He has his own consulting company now and he’s a local boy (we both live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and despite the media’s misinformation he doesn’t live on a ranch). Jeff Pulver has a fascinating history with technology, from working with ham radios at age 9, making VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) the technology it is today, investing in Twitter to founding and running the movement that is the 140 Conferences.

We had a small a great Tweetup organized by Hugh Weber who is as close as you come to a social media guru (and a genuinely nice guy as well). I put together a video from the notes I took at the event because frankly it felt like it was too important not to document. Here’s a preview of the video…it’s not about the technology, it’s about people’s lives changing through connectivity.  If you attended the Tweetup I’d appreciate you sharing what you took away from the event.  I know we all learned something significant.
