My journey to self-employment interview

This week I sat down to talk about my journey with my good friend Kevin Miller, founder of the Free Agent Academy. It’s not every day that someone asks me to talk about how I’ve found success advising companies on how to use social media to grow their customer base and deliver better service.  It was perhaps my favorite interview of all time and at the same time a very humbling experience.  In the first 60 seconds of the interview I tell Kevin what percentage of my success I am responsible for.  Hint: it’s a small percentage.

If you’d like to hear some strong opinions then hit play. If you have disagreements or questions about stuff I’ve said then this is the place to voice them (in the comments below). I welcome the opportunity. Thanks for listening.

Television advertising is the only way to go!

kid watching tv

(If you don’t like sarcasm then please stop reading now.)

Television advertisements are the ONLY medium I suggest you promote your business with for the following reasons:

• Consumers believe your claims automatically
• No one skips commercials
• People often send copies of tv commercials they like to their friends on VHS tapes
• It’s very affordable compared to creating excitement through on-line communities
• You have my attention because I am watching tv primarily because I want to see your commercials
• 30 second commercials give me plenty of time to remember your location, phone number and the details of your special.
• You can change your ad instantly!
• The #1 activity people do while watching tv is sleep so you’re guaranteed to penetrate their subconscious mind. (the sleeping part is true…subconscious mind penetration, not so much)

Social media isn’t the ONLY way or the BEST way to market all brands and services.  Television advertising is expensive for most and ineffective for just as many because of its limitations.  If you disagree with me answer this question in the comments section.  If you own a DVR how many commercials do you watch during an hour of television watching?  I’m just sayin’…

Experience only matters in high school

I remember my freshman year.  I was no one…for the simple reason that I was inexperienced. I had no experience being a high school kid.  Fast forward…you’re an adult now.  You have an idea that will enable businesses to make more money, increase customer satisfaction.  But how much experience do you have?  Doesn’t matter.  Experience only matters in high school.  In the real world ideas beat experience (at least they should).
So what’s your excuse for not starting something new?  You’re not experienced?  So what? Here’s a tip – If you know more than me about sewing or baseball or electrodes or pillows then you’re an expert in my eyes.  Experts know more than their audience, that’s all it takes. So what are you an expert in and how can you leverage that expertise to come up with ideas that help people.  It doesn’t matter if it’s your first idea and you’re the new kid on the block.  Bill Gates’ first and last company was the eventual Microsoft.  It went through some name changes but overall his baby in the beginning is the Microsoft you know today.

You don’t have to be Bill Gates and it doesn’t have to have anything to do with computers.  It’s not the business sector that decides success, it’s your idea.  No more excuses please.  Start something. The world needs you to make it a better place.
