The Key To Getting Version 1.0 Done

Nuclear submarines are complicated, but they exist.

So how do we create things that are complicated? Start by making them easy.

  1. Make it small in your mind. It’s not life or death. Relax.
  2. Break it down. Create steps to break down the complicated whole.
  3. Ship. Put it out into the world so you can learn from it and then make it better.

What Should I Buy Next? How To Hide From Real Work

What program do you use for writing?
What kind of mic do you have for podcasting?
What do you find images for your blog posts?
Where do you host your blog?
What do you use to host webinars?
What does your swipe copy say?
What day do you close cart?
What are your price points?
What’s your refund policy?
Where do you host your course?

They are all equipment questions. Anyone with money can buy equipment.

Getting ready is the popular way to avoid doing the actual work.

Getting equipment isn’t scary, it’s hiding from real work.

Getting ready doesn’t put you at risk for rejection. No one will tell you to stop equipping yourself. Equipment is a path others have taken. You look and feel so busy preparing but you’re not any closer to shipping.

Until you can be rejected, you’re nowhere near the path to clarity.

Stop equipping yourself. You’re just stalling.

Where You Can Hide

Where We Hide and Our Excuse

Here’s a list of common hiding places and the stories we tell ourselves that keep us coming back to them.

  • Meetings that don’t have conflict = Now we’re all up to speed
  • Cc’ing = Someone else should do it
  • Inbox zero = I did something
  • Comments sections = I said something
  • Another on-line course = I invested in myself
  • Attending webinars = I learned something
  • Facebook = I connected with someone
  • Slack = We got clarity on something
  • Amazon one-click purchases = I needed that, fast.
  • Twitter = I’m learning
  • Scrolling through anything on your phone = More information please
  • News sites = I should be informed
  • Podcasts = I’m learning, again
  • Editing (words, audio, video, images) = It has to be just right
  • Late night television = I’m relaxing
  • YouTube = I’m wandering
  • Notifications = This might be important
  • Books you shouldn’t finish = I’m not quitter

I’m Not Yelling At You

I’m not yelling at you. I hide too. It’s easier to hide, but we both know it’s not going to help us get what we want or need.

The voice that tells you to hide doesn’t talk about the regret you’ll feel. When you hide, you lose your power, your voice, and your influence.

It’s Not All About Work

Hiding isn’t just about getting more work done. Watching late night television or the news is hiding from having meaningful time with your spouse while your kids are in bed.

Buying something on Amazon is hiding that you already have the tools you need to succeed, you’re just not using them.

Our Great Time

You can keep hiding but you can’t complain when you don’t get what you want. We live in the greatest time in history. If you are reading this you have more opportunities and tools at your disposal than any other generation in history. Your story is wrong. You think it’s scary out there. It’s not scary out there, it’s only scary in your head. Your fear is within you, not from an enemy outside of you.

The Results

When you stop hiding, you can do great work. You can lead people well. You can build a healthy company. You can write a meaningful book. You can innovate. You can create things that will last longer than you do.

A Word About Rest

You may do some of the things on that list to rest. Here’s the difference between rest and hiding; Rest rejuvenates us so we can be brave. Hiding makes us feel and act small.big difference.

Rest = become great
Hiding = stay small

If you live a comfortable life at work, at home, and in your mind then you can stop reading. If you fight fear, then keep reading.

Fear doesn’t run away scared. You can defeat it, though.

What Fear Says 1000pxFear is my greatest enemy, and it attacks in many ways. That’s why I’m creating the “What Fear Says” series. This series can be read in less than an hour that will help you understand how fear works. The first topic I’m tackling is Comparison.

To be clear, I’m not lecturing you on how to defeat fear. Fear is never defeated because it never goes away. We can avoid it by hiding, but we can’t avoid it if we want to make a difference. You wish to make a difference, so you’ve got to understand and confront fear.

Fear only goes away if you’re doing something that’s unimportant.
Fear is a sign that you’re going in the right direction on your creative journey.
Fear is not a stop sign; it’s a mile marker to let you know that your trip isn’t over.

If you fight fear, then you’re doing something important. The “What Fear Says” series will help you fight back against fear.

To combat an enemy, you must understand it. That’s why I’m creating the “What Fear Says” series. The first book is about COMPARISON.

These books will be easy to digest and full of stories about how fear works. I’m giving it away as soon as it’s done (by the end of March 2016) in exchange for your email. It’ll be available in print and on Amazon soon too, but ideas spread when we uncage them, so that’s why I’m giving it away if you want it.

There’s no “course” at the end. There’s no mastermind called Fear Warriors that I’m going to convince you to join. Maybe one day I’ll have more ways to help you fight fear but right now I’m taking this project one step at a time. Today it’s about finishing the first book. I hope you’ll sign up to get it and spread the word.

If you want the book then enter your info below:

Here is a lock screen image for your phone. (Right click and Save As to download the pic or do a hard press on your mobile phone to save it to your camera roll)
Do it exactly like them

What I Think About Instead of Actually Writing a Blog Post

  • Which program should I use to write my post?
  • Does that program sync with the cloud?
  • Should I use all bullet points or paragraphs?
  • Which picture should I use?
  • Will the picture look good on Pinterest? (I think about this and I’ve never put a picture on Pinterest)
  • Is my headline catchy, click worthy, or have X Steps To… in it?
  • Seth Godin already said that and he used less words
  • Should that be a new paragraph?
  • Should I have paragraph headings for every paragraph?
  • Are those H3 or H4?
  • My blog needs a redesign.
  • I should be thinking about SEO more.
  • How can I monetize this?
  • I wonder if Mike will tweet this one out?
  • Is it too long?
  • How many click to tweets should I include, because I love those things. (Really, I do)
  • Should I do a video too? I should do more videos.
  • Will I be considered more artistic if I just upload it to Vimeo instead of YouTube?
  • Is my RSS email campaign to finally format correctly?
  • This probably isn’t worth writing about.
  • I should check my email.
