The Best Method For Choosing Webinar Topics

I’ll soon be releasing a revised/new product that will help content creators be more organized and create more content.

It’s vital to teach on webinar topics my list is interested in so a few days ago I sent out a survey. I asked which webinar topics they wanted to learn more about.

The Detailed Results

I always love it when people break down their process (Bryan Harris does this better than anyone) so I’m breaking down my process so you can learn from it.

Of the roughly 4,200 emails I sent out 702 people click on the link to the survey. I made it clear that I would follow up with them about the free classes I’m teaching if they click on the link. I don’t need them to fill out the survey because I already have their email address in my system.

ConvertKit, my email provider of choice, allows me to tag each person who clicked on that link so I can follow up with them. I’ve combined a few other tags I have in my list into a segment. That segment is full of people who have downloaded ebooks or attended webinars related to content creation so I know they’re interested in the topic I’m teaching on.

1,462 people out of my list of 4,170 are interested in content creation based on the segment I’ve compiled (again, a segment is a group of tagged members of my list). That means 65% of my list isn’t interested in this topic thus far, but I could add more if I tried to reach out to them specifically, which I can easily do in ConverKit.

qualified leads

319 people submitted answers to my survey, including ten people who were not on my email list but wanted to be added. Somehow they found their way to my blog post and wanted me to to add them to my list.

Ten people are only .002% of my list, but that’s not I view those ten people. They are 10 people who are highly qualified leads that are very interested in this topic. They took a lot of time to find my post, enter their email and choose the webinar topics they wanted me to teach on.

The first choice for me to teach on is “The Seven Proven Strategies For Getting People To Pay Attention To Your Writing”. What’s very interesting is that it was the LAST option on the list. I had assumed the order would weight the answers, and the top three would have higher vote totals because people wouldn’t want to read through the whole list.

This shows me that voters thought through their choices, which is awesome.

The First Place Topic

That topic got 97 first place votes and 206 total votes. The most first place votes and the most total votes.

Seven Prove Strategies For Getting People To Pay Attention To Your Writing

The Second Place Topic

The second class you voted for was “The Fastest Method For Writing Better Content.” It received 73 first place votes and 173 total. Both totals are in second place.

I’m really glad the totals worked the way they did. Next time I’ll likely just have voters choose two options. It will show greater differences in vote totals and increase the number of people completing the survey.

The Fastest Method For Writing Better Content

Now it’s time to build those classes. That’s the easy part because I know what people want to learn about. So what are you going to teach your tribe about?

Start by asking them.

Why a free chapter is a lousy thing to give away if you want to sell a book

Post 3 of 26 of The Self-Publishing Series

The days of being teased are over
Do we really want to play the warehouse food sample game? I appreciate that you want to show me a bit of your book but you’re going to give me one chapter? First, it’s not hard to write one good chapter. Second, giving away a chapter of your book is like giving someone one digit of your phone number (Tweet That). Is it really your number? Sure. Does it move the relationship forward? Not really. My advice is to be stupid generous and see what happens. We’ll get to that later.

Why your free chapter has absolutely no value
Giving one chapter away has lost its value because of, you guessed it, Amazon.com. I can download a “free sample” of every book in the Kindle library and Amazon doesn’t require me to join your email list. I also get to see the reviews of other people who have already purchased the book to help me decide if I want to download that free sample.

What else you should give your readers
Two things are usually happening in the exchange for the chapter. Most authors, if they’re smart, are using the bait of a free chapter to get your email address. As the book gets closer to release or when the author develops other products related to their book they can communicate with you. The first benefit of the free chapter is creating a relationship. The second goal of giving away the chapter is to sell more books at launch. This is where I think authors miss an opportunity. If authors really want to sell more books at launch they must out give Amazon. They should give away different forms of those chapters (audio specifically) or some of those products they were going to deliver later.

Here’s an example.

Customers want it yesterday so act like Hyatt

Sales person: “When would you like your product delivered?”
Customer: “How about yesterday?”

I purchased Michael Hyatt’s new book Platform a few days ago when it launched and even though I’m an Amazon Prime member (free 2-day shipping and $3.99 for overnight shipping per item for $79 a year) the delivery was delayed because they didn’t carry enough inventory. That’s Amazon’s fault by the way, not Hyatt’s. I spoke to his “people” and they assured me that Amazon just didn’t believe the demand that the Hyatt team told them was coming. Mike’s a smart guy so I wasn’t upset when I had to wait for the book to arrive because I got it that day. OK Andy, did you get it that day or was it delayed? Both.

When I bought the physical book I followed the directions on this page and I got the book FREE on Kindle and on audio and a ton of other freebies. Mike understands that when we buy something we want it immediately. That’s one of the few reasons people will still drive to Best Buy or their local Apple store. We want it now. Next time you want to sell something, even if it’s a physical product that requires shipping, offer something right away for your customers to consume. We want it…yesterday.

You can get the bonuses till the end of the day (May 25th) at this page.

I’ll be reviewing Mike’s book in a few weeks on the Books For A Better You Show.

Check out the first two episodes where I reviewed $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau and Love Does by Bob Goff and subscribe if you like it!

Permission marketing cost me thousands of dollars

He was going to pay me thousands of dollars and I was going to take it. He wanted to pay me to help him promote a legitimate product to a demographic that really did need it. There was a problem though. He bought a list of email addresses but didn’t really know who they were.

I asked him if it was a list of people that had asked to get information from him specifically. He said that they had all opted in at some point. “Opted in to what?” I thought but didn’t ask.

If there’s on thing I’ve learned from reading 4,648 Seth Godin blog posts it’s that permission based marketing is the most powerful way to gain allegiance and build a business. For more than a few thousand dollars I thought I could let it slide. It would be about [Read more…]
