The most important podcast tool you need to invest in

The tool is never as important as what the tool creates. I own a drill but it took me almost an entire weekend to build four steps. I own a $1,400 laptop with about $3,000 worth of graphics software on it but I can’t create a decent logo to save my life. I get asked what tools are best for podcasting usually followed by “for a person on a budget”. The short answer of what you need to start a podcast are these three things.

A headset.
Some software.
A web site.

The tools don’t matter
There are about 10 other details that I could go into but the short answer is that you don’t need much to start a podcast. The tools frankly don’t matter as much as you hope they do. I got 50,000 downloads using a basic headset, a $20 piece of software with a website hosted for $7 a month. If you want a step by step on how to get a podcast set up then visit my friend Cliff Ravenscraft. But you’ll be wasting your money on equipment and tutorials if you don’t have the most important thing in podcasting.

A change every podcaster must make right now

You need to add your name to your show title. Watch the video below to find out why and where (if you use Feedburner to manage your podcast feed).

How do I start a podcast?

Many of my readers and listeners have asked me how they can start their own podcast. I’m considering creating something that will help them create and develop a successful podcast. In addition to the technical setup of podcasting (that’s the easy part) it’s very important to know how to get great guests, how to conduct great interviews, how to organize your show preparation and what tools to use when collaborating with a cohost.

If you’re interested in starting your own podcast someday and you’d like to stay updated on what I’m working on then answer these five questions. It would be awesome if you’d share this form with others on Facebook or Twitter using the links to the left or below this post.

Thanks,
Andy

Three simple steps to a great interview

“The quality of our life is determined not by the answers we give but by the questions we ask.” – Andy Andrews

1. Make your guest feel safe.
Guests feel safe when they know that you’re professional, prepared, confident and friendly. Think of yourself as their lawyer and your job is to prepare them for cross examination. You’re friendly but ask hard questions because you’re actually on their side.

Crowd-sourcing ; Can it create art?

Crowds can create great things
  1. Someone creates something inspiring
  2. Lots of people who live nowhere near each other get inspired
  3. Those people hunger for the inspiration to continue (the original artist has done her job, now it’s up to the community to take action)
  4. Tribe leader/organizer shares a vision for a collaborative project that will add to the original work
  5. The tribe is gathered by one person (then the tribe starts to assemble itself)
  6. A shared vision is clarified by the group through collaborative effort
  7. Details, details, details
  8. The tribe benefits from being a part of the effort
  9. All future consumers of the original inspiring work benefit from the tribe’s creation
What did you think of?  Why haven’t you done it? How can I help?(I’m creating one in November.  You’ll hear it about it soon.)
