You'll never do real work

Stop!!! by http://www.sxc.hu/profile/ColinBroug

The truth is, you (and I) really don’t want to get work done. I’m talking about a specific type of work. We don’t want to do the kind of work that makes us feel vulnerable, the kind of work that could seem pushy or authoritative. We allow distractions so we have an excuse for doing work that doesn’t really move us or anyone else to a different place. “Status quo” is not a goal, it is an act of surrender. These things are keeping you (and me) from doing great work. There are many more but these are the ones that involve technology.

Do The Work Podcast

Do The Work was written by Steven Pressfield and released by the Domino Project in the Spring of 2011. After receiving Steve’s approval (he asked me to call him Steve instead of Mr. Pressfield) to create a podcast that explores his book I decided to take his advice and “swing for the fences” with an even bigger idea. Do The Work Community is that larger idea. It is a place where anyone with an idea can come and receive accountability and encouragement as they seek to “do the work” and beat the resistance. If that last sentence didn’t make sense then you haven’t read the book…so you should.

The Do The Work Podcast will launch in July of 2011.  It will highlight the projects being worked on in the Do The Work Community, explore Steve’s book more deeply and continue the lifelong service of providing assistance to artists everywhere who are working to ship their creations.

Join us at the Do The Work Community and check back here often for new episodes of the podcast.

A lie I hear every day

“You’re no one.”

I hear these words every day. They come from the resistance. It is a force outside of myself. It lives in me (and in all people trying to create what they were made to create) but it is not me. It has traits that make it easy to identify no matter who its target is. It is a universal experience, reality and being all at once. It tries to ruin my marriage, my work and my passions.

Consider it a privilege to be lied to

The resistance said the same thing to Barak Obama when he wanted to run for President. [Read more…]

Author and consultant Phil Simon has navigated the world of publishing and learned to create his own path to success through crowd building and then crowd-sourcing.  We talked about publishing a lot, movies some and of course Seth Godin a bit.  He’s the author of “The New Small” an avid golfer and a pretty stinking good tennis player too.  Enjoy the show, I did.

Simplify things by making everything a project

Don't post two blog posts on the same day (post #2 for March 22, 2011)

Some rules:

Everything has to have strategy behind it.
Get your keywords right.
Use the Thesis theme, it’s better for SEO.
Don’t send your newsletter on Monday mornings.
Offer something free to get people to sign up for your newsletter.
Use a Mac.
Don’t post twice in one day on your blog.

There are all these rules that we’re supposed to follow if we want to be successful. The problem with the rules is that even the rule breakers, the category makers, even they follow some rules. Today you should break a rule. The reason you shouldn’t post twice on your blog in one day is because your last post won’t get read as much. It’ll get buried. But what if I write on my site because my heart tells me to? What if I write because I want to help people, not because I want to do it in the most optimized way? What if we all stop asking for permission and following rules that some other person made up (even if they’re true)?

What if you posted two blog posts today? It might be two more posts than you wrote all last week. According to my calculator that’s an improvement, even if it breaks a rule. Do stuff because you want to do it and stop seeking permission. People who ask for permission don’t really believe in what they’re doing.
