How to save time by creating WordPress bookmarks

If you want to create more content can capture ideas when they come to you then creating shortcuts (in this case bookmarks) can help tremendously. There are a few things I do every day on my site that it made sense for me to make shortcuts to (in the form of bookmarks).  Here are three things I do a lot with my site and how you can create bookmarks to save you time and create more content.

I add new posts.

Upload new images.

I create new Pretty Links, which allows you to create custom URLs.

You can see in the picture below where I’m dragging the highlighted option to my bookmarks bar. It creates a small globe as I drag it.

How to customize the more tag to get better engagement on your blog

It’s important to get readers to engage with your site and one of the best ways to do that is to use the “more” tag when writing a post. Here’s an example from my last post.

It’s a small bit of code you can place in the middle of your blog post that will show everything before that point on the home page but force the reader to click on the link to view the rest of the post. This draws the reader onto the page where they can leave a comment, “Like” or tweet about the individual post. There are a few variations of what the more tag displays on your page. In my theme it’s “Click to continue…” which is pretty boring.

You can very easily customize your more tags and here’s how.

Ironic that this is a customized more tag isn’t it? Click here…

WordPress blogging tip: Use fullscreen mode to write your posts

You will be distracted by something before you finish reading this post because that’s the way our brains work now. If that’s true then we all need things to help us stay focused. If you use WordPress as your platform for your web site then there’s a great option that provides a distraction free environment for you to write your content. You need to be in the HTML tab of your page or post and then you should see the “Fullscreen” button.

HTML mode shows fullscreen button

If you combine the fullscreen mode in WordPress with fullscreen mode for your browser (Cmd+Shift+F on a Mac) then you get a totally distraction free writing environment. Here’s what it looks like while I write this post.

My journey to self-employment interview

This week I sat down to talk about my journey with my good friend Kevin Miller, founder of the Free Agent Academy. It’s not every day that someone asks me to talk about how I’ve found success advising companies on how to use social media to grow their customer base and deliver better service.  It was perhaps my favorite interview of all time and at the same time a very humbling experience.  In the first 60 seconds of the interview I tell Kevin what percentage of my success I am responsible for.  Hint: it’s a small percentage.

If you’d like to hear some strong opinions then hit play. If you have disagreements or questions about stuff I’ve said then this is the place to voice them (in the comments below). I welcome the opportunity. Thanks for listening.
