You want someone to pick you. They are smarter, faster and better than you in some way. Maybe all they did was do what you want to do before you did. Since they were there first, they have a title or because they have a book, they’re the expert. You stand in front of them and eagerly raise your hand. They scan the line and they pass over you and they pick…no one. In today’s market it’s not just more difficult to get picked, it might be a waste of time.
Your stuff is as good as it is, not as good as “they” say it is
I check my Google Analytics often. It’s a waste of time. It’s not good for my psyche. I think it matters much more than it does. I don’t even understand some of the numbers that disappoint me. No, that last sentence doesn’t make sense because how I feel doesn’t make sense. Analytics, comments on your blog, retweets, signing bonuses, plusses (those are the Google Plus things..not sure what they’re called because I think it’s big fat waste of my time to be on Google Plus when it doesn’t ADD anything to my life). Get it? Google Plus doesn’t ADD anything…ok, I’ll move on.
You look for your validation from outside of yourself. You want to get picked. I do too. Question: Is your work, your art, your whatever you produce better because others validate it? Our art is not better because it’s validated. It’s more popular but it’s not better. Picasso’s paintings aren’t worse when they’re in a warehouse. They’re just not as popular because less people see them.
Being irresistible
They’re still giving out big book advances, selling the rights to make movies out of stories and groups are still being signed to record labels, just not as much. Don’t panic and don’t wait to get picked. Now you have no excuses for not producing content/art/music. You are reading this on a screen and below it you probably have a keyboard. You can create something awesome. Yes, you. You can add value to people’s lives. You can become so irresistible that someone will want to pick you! The amazing thing is that by the time you are “deserving” you don’t need to be picked anymore. You don’t need them to be successful because you’ve helped enough people along the way that you’re successful without them.
Rich people get deals
Something amazing happens when you become wealthy. People start giving you stuff for free. You can actually finally afford more stuff but people actually give you meals, clothes and books. Lesson; Once you have success you don’t need someone to pick you. Once you become desirable you don’t have to seek validation anymore because you’re already validated.
You’re worthy.
You’re capable.
You have a calling.
You can do it.
You don’t have to be picked.
When was a time in your life that you picked yourself instead of asking to be validated?
